James BARKLEY, with his father, also named James BARLKEY, his mother, two brothers and a sister, left the North of Ireland Dublin (Scotch Irish) on the good ship George and Anne in the "Clinton Expedition" on 20 May 1729. They landed on 4 Oct., 1729 after 139 days at sea. There were 96 deaths on board including the father, also named James Barkley and his (unknown )mother who were buried at sea. The three surviving Barkley children included James, a brother and a sister who remained in Cape Cod one winter then went north. Their journey took them to New York City and Basking Ridge, NJ-(having relatives there) to “Little Britian” Montgomery, Orange Co., New York. They were raised by people named Barber. (See Barclays of New York-Michigan State Library, Lansing , MI) A sack of gold which the father was known to possess was not to the found when the children left the ship. According to a descendent of Clinton, the captain had an unsavorory reputation and was responsible for the long time in crossing and for the sickness and deaths on board. The above James BARKLEY married Mary MOFFET in 1743. He was one of the first Trustees of the Goodwill Church, Montgomery, Orange County,New York. To them were born five sons and one daughter.
