My ancestors were also from the Kilbirnie area and we have documented them back to a James Barclay who died in 1789. This is not your James Barclay but there may well be a connection back a generation or two. There were many Barclays in the Kilbirnie area at this period and in the course of our research we gathered much info on them from Parish records, Sasines & other sources. Looking through them I see several possible individuals that were probably related to your James Barclay. I need to check but I suspect he was born 3 Feb 1763, his father was a Peter Barclay of Gierston, Kilbirnie (died c1800), mother was Jean, surname unknown, brothers & sisters were William, John, Robert, Janet, Peter, Mary, Francis and George. Your James may also have had a son Peter. His grandfather was probably a William Barclay. I will check my records and confirm dates, names, places, etc.

Ian Barclay
