Hey Janice. Don't know if I have already answered you by email or not, so here goes. We think that Robert Barkley of Rowan Co Tx signed his name with an x because of his age.We do not think he was illiterate. My own father, who was highly educated, could not make his hand write his name in his last years and signed only with a G. that was very difficult to read. About any of the children of Robert Barkley of Rowan Co using the K. They all did at first. When son Walter, my ancestor married in Kentucky, and also brother Robert, they used the k spelling. When Walter and sons came to Texas, they were still using the K spelling. They started using the c spelling later. In tracing descendants, I found some who did not stop using the k spelling, have a box from all who responded, don't recall exactly which. I have been told that in Scotland and America it was common to have both spellings used within the same family even. I can give you no documentation what so ever about Leah being Leah Madison. I got it from three different ones. The descendants of Robert b. 1774 say the second choice of who Leah might be was Leah Todd. I got it from Alanna Riley and Sandra Hargrove also, via Barclay Bastion. About Anderson. I have wondered about that also. Seems like one of the other descendants I heard from had it in their name also. Forget which one just now, maybe Samuel or John. Walter and Eliza's second son was named Anderson. others there after in Texas had the Anderson name, frequently it was a middle name. You mentioned having information about the other descendants of Robert and Leah. I would like very much to have more informationif you can share. Do you have MS Word on your computer? I have some information, gotten in the last few months. As I understand, no one knows anything about brother David, not even who he married. About having same names in later descendants, your friend Jeanne descended from Henry, seeing her ggrandfather's name in England, etc. Wash your mouth out. We are Scots. Several notable Scots were named Sir George Barclay, but my father was not named for him as far as anyone knows. He was the only George (and my brother) among the Texas Barclays. We think he was named for George Washington as he was born on Washington's birthday, and it was an acceptable name. I doubt they ever heard of the two famous Sir George Barclays.
