I am thrilled with the research mysteries that are clearing up as a result of only four months correspondence from Barclay and McQueen cousins via online message boards, webs and chatrooms. Here are the answers to some of the questions related to the Robert Barkley b. est 1718 and Leah (Madison)Barkley of Rowan Co NC before 1755 strain through son Walter Barclay who married Elizabeth McQueen b. 1790 of Madison Co Kentucky in 1804, daughter of John McQueen and Nancy Crews and granddaughter of Dougal McQueen POW bond sold in Phil. 1716.1. Walter had no son other than those born of the marriage to Elizabeth McQueen. Their children included; Robert, Anderson, David, John, James Walter, Jeremiah Todd, and Milton, and daughters Mary "Polly", and Louisa. 2. Peter Barclay b. 1795 was the son of Walter's brother John Barkley and Geiley (Jeil)Kern Barkley. 3)Walter and Elizabeth's eldest son was Robert b. 1805 who married Sarah McKinsey. They had some children born before they went to east Texas in what became Tyler Co. in the mid 1830's and some more after they got there. Two of those born before were sons Lacy Milton and James Walter. Robert died before 1850 and his Widow Sarah McKinsey Barclay married Widower Milton McQueen, father or uncle of Lacy Milton Barclay's wife Nancy, and brother of Robert's mother Elizabeth McQueen. 4. James Walter b 1831, son of Robert and Sarah McKinsey Barclay married Martha Foster, sister of Virginia Foster, wife of Walter's father Robert's brother James Walter Barclay b. 1816, ( and aunt of Elizabeth Rigsby who married Robert b 1805's brother Jeremiah Todd Barclay )(The Foster and Rigsby families were related to the Lawsons of Georgia). Walter and Martha had several children and Martha died. 5) Then Walter b. 1831 married Mary Jane Mahaffey Powell, a young widower, and they had several children, including James Walter b. 1871 who married Nancy Laura Pool and they had fourteen children and Henry Franklin b. 1868 who married Clara Pool, Laura's sister, and they had 8 children. 6)After Clara died, Henry married Lee Barclay, who had one son, and then Henry married Victoria Viola Light who had three children and was Henry's widow. Also closely related to Laura and Clara Pool were their mother Alice Delila Riley Pool Bourn Barclay and her 17 children; Four Pool children with her first husband, Josh W Pool, who was shot dead as a result of an argument over a horse, a Bourn son with her second husband who died of yellow fever, and 12 Barclay children with James "Jim" Barclay who was step father to them all and the son of Lacy Milton Barclay b. 1826 and Nancy McQueen, Lacy Milton being the eldest child of Robert b. 1806 and Sarah McKinsey Barclay McQueen. 7)The children of Walter Barclay and Elizabeth McQueen were; sons Robert, Anderson, David, John, James Walter, Jeremiah Todd and Milton, and daughters Mary "Polly" and Louisa. David died in the US Mexican War. Jeremiah Todd was shot dead on election day 1850 by Mr Hanks, Milton died unmarried and young. The others all married and had descendants.9)The children of Walter and Leah Barkley of Rowan Co NC began to use the Barclay spelling of their surname after Kentucky, but a few continued to use the Barkley name.10) the other Robert Barkley married to Eleanor family in Rowan Co were descendants of Henry Barclay of Rowan Co and there were some other sons of Henry. They turned out nicely, and two presidents of the United States, President James Knox Polk through the Barkley-Knox link and Lyndon Baines Johnson through the Barkley-Cowan link and one Vice President Alben Barkley are descendants of that family. The Robert Barkley married to Eleanor is likely a cousin or possibly nephew of our Robert Barkley married to Leah Madison who may be connected to the family of President James Madison. Their daughter who married a Todd was connected with the family of Mary Todd who married President Abe Lincoln. Robert's son Robert who married Madison Co Kty girl Mary Hubbard and the Hubbards went to the Louisana Purchase into the part that became MO and settled it, and some went on to be pioneer in other territories, such as Oregon. Robert's son Samuel who married Mary Davis died in 1804, leaving two maybe three children and one, David, went to Texas. Robert's daughter Margaret had descedants and I am thinking they went to Ohio and some on to Texas, not sure. There are still a few mysteries. What about the descendants of the other sister, and what happened to brother David, and who are the parents of Robert Barkley of Rowan County NC, and Leah Madison (or possibly Todd) Barkley of Rowan County NC, and how do they fit in with Margaret Kerr Brown Barclay and her children, many of whom went on the Rowan Co NC and had the same naming pattern, including Robert, Samuel, Margaret (King), etc. and who was the unknown Barclay married to Margaret Kerr who was the father of her Barclay children. Items of interest for research online are; Battle of Kings Mountain SC where Capt Robert Barkley and his son, and the sons of Henry Barkley fought in the American Revolution, Clan Barclay, Barclay Bastion, Tyler County Genealogy Society Webs, Texas history on line as well as all of the gen forum message boards for Madison Co Kentucky, Rowan Co NC, Tyler Co, Texas, Barclay and all of the surnames linked by marriage.
