My great-grandfather was James Barbour, born in Ireland in 1827. His parents were John and Catherine Glassen Barbour and the whole family (6 boys)came to the US inthe 1840's. James lived in the north a while then moved to Memphis. In 1880 he moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi. His father, John, was killed in a steamboat explosion on the Muskingum River about 1852. In 1863 James wrote someone named Joseph. In that letter he mentioned that John had been wounded. My guess is that Joseph and John and James were brothers. William was another brother (in Chillicothe, Ill.) and William had a son named John born in 1866. That would lead to a guess that John had died of his wounds. James' letter mentions Eliza and Lizzie. We're pretty sure that there were 6 boys and no girls in the family so another guess is that these are wives of two of his brothers. We do know that both of William's wives were Mary. In James' letters are two addresses - David M. Barbour in Baltimore and Joseph Barbour in Pittsburgh. James named a son Davie so that strengthens my assumption that he had a brother with that name. I also know that a brother (name unknown)lived in Annawan, Illinois. He died in the late 1890's. We have a picture of James in his Confederate uniform and another of a man in a Union uniform. We were always told that he was William but someone turned it over and it's shown to be "John K. Barbour". That goes along with the mention of John's wounds. If this ties into your family I'd love any info you have. I especially want pictures of John and William so that I maybe be sure of the picture that is in doubt.
