Hi Fred,
I too have an interest in the Barber surname as I descend from Thomas (c. 1736-1816) and Margaret (c. 1737-1825) Barber of Greenwich Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, NJ.(I also have Family Tree DNA projects.)
Many have wondered what Thomas's relationship was to John Barber (b. c. 1719) of Sussex County.Interestingly, Margaret's maiden name was given as Barber in a DAR application and an article on their descendant, Harold Herman Bender. If that is actually true (it of course could have been a transcription error), could Margaret have been related to John?
Thomas and Margaret had two sons, Samuel and John, who left children.I do not know if Samuel had sons, but John's two sons (he predeceased his father) were mentioned in Thomas's will. I have not come across very much on either family, although it is probable there are descendants of both living today.
Have you seen Don Barber's information on the Barbers?See:

and then look for the New Jersey Barbers.
Would be interested in hearing more about your research and progress.
Sincerely, Tom
