Florida Barbers in Civil War
My ancestor William Barber arrived in Gadsden Co, FL by 1829 when he patented land. He is included on the 1830 census for that county. So far I have found 2 sons named Jarrot and William Jr who served in the 2nd Seminole war. Three sons named Andrew Jackson Barber, Chistopher Columbus Barber and Morgan Boswell Barber all served in the 2nd FL Cav, mainly in Co "D" but also in co's "A" and "G" along with brothers in laws named Robinsons of Morgan and Andrew. The three brothers all transferred to the 5th FL Cav, Co "G". The brothers supplied their own horses. Morgan and Andrew married Robinson sisters who were their neighbors. William Barber SR had at least 3 grandsons who served in the 2nd FL Cav, Co "D". They were Bryant Berry Barber (son of William Sr's son Jarrat Barber). Two grandsons named William M Barber and John W Barber (sons of William Sr's son Jerdon Barber) served in the 2nd FL Cav Co "D" as well. Grandsons William and John and their widows recieved a pension from the state of FL for their civil war service. William M Barber had pension number A 01329 and John W Barber held pension number A 11474. Both died in Gadsden Co, FL. Bryant Berry Barber recieved a pension in the state of AL while living in Henry Co, AL. All of his sons and grandsons supplied their own horses.
I believe that most of the other Barbers who served in the Civil War from FL were probably descendants of Moses E Barber and his brother William W Barber who lived east of my ancestors.
