I'll stick in a penny's worth, too, if you don't mind. Be prepared for frustration, for false leads, and if you have other family members also researching, it's a good idea to say so in your posts and save everybody the time and effort when some other helpful researcher tells you about your cousin's or your sister's post, just sure that they're helping you break through your brick wall!
Also realize that you're going to learn things you never knew about history, that history will become personal for you. It's amazing how close you can feel to a relative or ancestor just because you know a detail or two about their lives you never knew before. Your ggggrandmother becomes real to you when you find a picture or you learn that she went out for a stroll in the rose garden after dinner and eloped with your ggggrandfather! (True story!) Just keep your sense of humor keen, your pencils sharp and your eyeglasses polished, because you're going to be reading a lot of tiny print and/or faded ink. Best of luck. My Barbers were from NC (we think) and then Georgia, and may have Creek or Cherokee ancestry in there somewhere. How about yours?
