There is no indication on his death certificate why he would have been call "Colonel". He was a retied ranch manager, widowed, and died of an accidental gunshot wound in his apartment in Joplin at age 75.
In 1942 when he applied for his SSN he was employed with the Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co. of Joplin and 49 years old.
All this would make him to young for WWI and to old for WWII.
To be realistic about it all, if he earned the title "Colonel" he would have had to be career military. The documented dates I have pointed out make that very not likely.
Apparently he assumed the title "Colonel" much as "Colonel" Sanders of KFC fame had done. Sorry if I have busted anyone's bubble, but those are the facts. Some of it in Laurence's own handwriting. Dave-B
