Hi Nadia,

I just answered what sounds like a very similar query on Ancestry.com's message board. You might check the recent thread about Barbee's in TN. I provided some tips on researching mulattos or blacks.

There were several James A. Barbees. It would help if you provide more identifying info like where and when he lived or what slave schedule you found him on, etc.
