Does anybody have any information about the parentage of Sarah Ann Gill?
Edward Jordan (1741-1799), son of Hon. Edward Jordan and Ann Dottin, owner of Molyneux Plantation in St. James' and Jordans' in St. George's, appears to have had a daughter Ann, possibly by a free negro woman, perhaps named Mary Ann or maybe Sarah Ellcock.
In his will, [Will, Barbados, 23 Dec1799 RB6/42 p.304] he left a substantial legacy to Ann Jordan,(m. Gill) a free coloured woman who became one of the 10 National Heroes for her services to Methodism, which actively promoted Abolition, while Gibbes Walker Jordan, the Colonial Agent for Barbados in London, and a close relative of Edward, was still arguing for the continuance of slavery as an economic necessity for the island.
None of the biographical sketches seem to mention her parentage.
