Hi Jan, Paul Wentworth was from Barbados (1728-1793)from an American family. He was a member of the Surinam Court of Civil Justice. He was also the owner of the coffee estate called 'Assistance' at Cabbes Creeq and the Appeccappe brick factory in Surinam and the Barbados coffee estate at Warapper Creeck. He might have been a cousin of the New Hampshire Governor (1717-1740)called John Hampshire or his son Benning Hampshire. The Wentworth family were the Kennedy's of their day. Paul Wentworth opposed any break with England during the American War and spied for the UK and after the Declaration of Independence, he then offered to spy on his fellow Americans. He established an espionage network in America and Europe. In France he had his top agent and former employee Edward Bancroft as secretary to American envoy Silas Deane to the French Court. His other two agents were Benjamin Franklynn and Arthur Lee. Paul Wentworth died in Surinam in 1790. The plantation Paul Wnetworth inherited from his wife was called 'Kleinhoop' along the Cottica River, to whom I am related. Hope this helps. Have you any other info on him to add to my archives?
