Thanks Gerald. I think his was a fascinating life. He was born in Barnados, joined the navy then settled in South Australia. He certainly saw a lot of life. There was a Zacariah Humphrey in Barbados in 1637. I think that my James William Humphreys is descended from an Edward Umphrey (spellings changed) who wrote his will in 1684 and would seem to have been in Barbados some time before that. So there should be a lot of Umphrey/ Humphrey/ Humphreys in Barbados. James William Humphreys was the son of James Pilgrim Umphrey who was a plantation owner. As he was listed as coloured when he joined the navy, his mother must have been a slave of the daughter of slaves. We still have dark curly hair in the family and don't get sunburnt, for which I am grateful to my African ancestry. I don't think he ever told his family about his mother and there was probably much he kept to himself. The modern day family is of course fascinated. We think he may perhaps have married in Barbados and had a son James William Humphrey born in 1840 before he joined the navy. If you ever come across any Humphrey interested in family history in Barbados, please let me know. Genny Notify Administrator about this message?
