Bob - heard back from my friend in NJ, who feels it was most likely a Union piect, probably an Enfield," Tower" was a lockplate marking on rifles, not the manufacturer of the rifle/musket itself.
He adds: "My flip judgment on the gun is Yankee imported P53 .577 caliber enfield, probably made by a Birmingham contractor."
Went into a search engine and found two army troop listings for both sides -- thre are many Company B's shown, definitely in AOP.
Need to narrow down WHICH Co. B he was in. But since the weapon was found on the field, and it was a Southern victory, odds would seem to be on the side of it being a Union piece. For him, definitely was a "dead end", all puns intended.
