I descend from Cornelius Jacob and his son Cornelius.
Both Cornelius's can be found in the 1880 US Census in Illinois and on the same page! But the elder Cornelius seems to have died very recently.
The census asks for individuals living in a home prior to the first of the month. The elder Cornelius and all of his information is there, but crossed out and the census taker has written "died". His second wife and many of their children are listed as well.
The census taker apparently had difficulty with the name.
He has very clearly written it as "Banda" for both families.
A discrepancy is that Cornelius the elder is listed as Cornelius D, NOT Cornelius Jacob. But as all the other information is correct, it would be a most amazing coincidence if this were a different Cornelius.
The younger Cornelius's wife Maria and children Lissy and Charles are listed. I descend from Charles, then 3.
Family information was that Cornelius the younger married a Mary Foltz. But living next door to the family is a Franziska Volz (the German pronunciation would be Foltz) and I think it HIGHLY likely that this is Maria's mother.
Information on the family is sketchy as Maria apparently left for unknown reason. Then Cornelius (apparently)abandoned the kids. I can find and post the rest of the kids another time. As a teenager, Charles and some of the kids moved to the vicinity of Fort Scott Kansas.
Charles Robert Banta and Myrtle Mae (Whisner) Banta were my great grandparents.
Other research finds Fransiska Volz arriving America 1851 from Germany.
