Jane: I am sure you have found out by now, but prior to 1814 surnames were not required in Holland. In 1814 Napolean ordered that everyone take a surname. Names like Epke Jacobse are simply patronyms and in this case means Epke, son of Jacob. In America, however, surnames were generally always used. some families that stayed with the traditional patronymic naming after arriving in America, generally took a patronym for a surname after a generation or so. In New Amsterdam, surnames that were once patronyms such as Cornelis (Cornelius), Hendricks, Dedricks, Cosijn, etc., are now established surnames. Also, the Reformed Dutch Church was already functioning in Holland when Epke was born, and there is little doubt in my mind that he was a member of that church throughout his life. His uncle, Luues Epkes was married to Hintie Jarichdr at the Barradeel Reformed Dutch Church in Friesland on 9 September 1618, a year before Epke is believed to have been born.
