Robert and Marla....As you may know, the Banta name started, as far as we know, in America in the late 17th century. Before that the old Friesian naming system was used - if you were the first born son your first name was the first name of your peternal grandfather, your last name the first name of your father, etc. In other words no realy surname as we now know it. The descendants of Epke Jacobse (his father's first name, Jacob, last name Epkens)Banta (added in America) were quite well tracked in A Friesian Family by T. M. Banta, NY, 1893. I have seen estimates that there are about 15,000 of us Banta's - all related. In fact, the late emminant genealogists, James and Virgil Banta were trying to bring the whole Banta family up to date from 1893 to the late 1980's when both passed on. Their work is being continued and may one day be available for us all. Who will keep it up????

A fun note, when I first met my wife she asked me to hand my US Navy ID card to another officer standing nearby and who had wanted to date her also. His name ------Robert L. Banta!!!!

Robert L. Banta
