The English Bannings
The date that the first Banning came to England is not definite but it is belived that they came from Holland. The Banning name is found as early as 1438, the spelling may differe somtime. but it is clearly traceable forward.

The probability is thatthe first Banning's settled near the present site of Bnningham in Norfolk, but today little trace is left. Sir Paul Bayning,, Lord Mayor of London, had his estate Little Bently in County Essex. When he was elevated to the Peerage and created the first Baron and the Viscount BAnning in 1611 he changed the spelling of his name in the patent of nobility, to it's present form, BANNING. The Peerage became extinct and only exists in the female line in the peerage of Pembroke and Leigh. A coat of Arms was granted in London in 1588 for services rendered during the Crusades by the Banning's.
Records of some branches are traceable to 1438, but further back than 1694, little is certain. Additional research may bring to light any missing and valuable facts that would connect the English and American lines. AT this point, all that is know is that the 1790, a family ob Bannings came to Philadelphia, however all but one, John, returned to England.

The number of Bannings living in England today is limited, with most living in London, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Lancashire. Bannings are said to be in Scotland also.

Dr. Robert Joseph Banning of Sheeburyness, Essed, whose grandfather lived in Philadelphia from 1793 to 1799 is the authority for most of the facts on the Banning line..
