According to Encarta 98 Encyclopedia, Bengali of the Indo-European family, is the first language of more than 98 percent of the Bangladesh population. Urdu is the language of several thousand people. Many of these emigrated from India in the early 1940s. A number of languages akin to Myanmar are also spoken.
