the name BANCKERS (Banckert, Banckers, Banckaars, Banckaart / (Banrkas (Pancras)) ) can be found in the Netherlands nowadays as BANKERS. The name appears church registers in early 17th ct as Banckers in Amsterdam, and Bakel (both Netherlands). Joos Banckers was a famous admiral in the navy of De Ruyter.

The "Meeertens Instituut" in the Netherlands claims that Bankers is a patronym probably denoting the profession of Tyler (Slaterer) .... Bank (or Banckert / Bankaart ) appears to have been a nickname (surname?: cleyne Banckert (small Bankers), swarte Bank (black Bank-ers). Even admiral Bankers's name is given as 'van Trappen gezeit Bankerst = 'van Trappen called Bankert'. (1688:Het Leven en Bedryf van den Heere Michiel de Ruiter, by Gerard Brandt)

It should be pointed out that the surname Bankert is still common in Germany, where 'Bankert' means 'bastard' (as in unlawful child (son). (Bank = sofa ... child illicitly conceived on the sofa rather than in marital bed).

In the Netherlands there are 2 localities that bear this name:
1 Banckers meer (Banckers lake) formerly in Amstelveen, called Bankras today
2 Bankert, a hamlet in the village of Milheeze (today's town: Gemert Bakel in the Netherlands) (the Banckers (Banckaars) actually lived in this hamlet !)

Details can be found on my web page:
