Hello Rob,
I have come across the name of Mathias in my research. The information I have on my great grandmother was included in my post. I went to Racine and found the grave for Elisabeth and Andrew Balzer who passed away in 1902 and 1899 respectively. They were members of Holy Name Catholic church on Grand and Villa. One of the founding members of this church was Adam Baltzer. I have limited information about my great grandmother Barbara Balzer Gass, my father remembers her quite well beig that he was almost 30 yrs. old when she died. He said she was from Alsace, which is also on her death certificate. We tried to look up the 1890 census for Racine but it was destroyed in a fire. My Great Grandparents had already moved to Mn in 1900. It was common in that time for different generations to come at seperate times as with my Norwegian relatives who came to the United States in the 1880's for one generation and then 1906 for the other, perhaps this is the link with the Balzer/Baltzer famil of Racine.
I plan on doing more reserch in Racine at the archives at the historical society on Main Street by the lake front.
