The diary was kept by ALBIN Franz Balzer, son of Franz and Ida Ernestine (Lemke) Balzer who came to the USA from Austria, first to Chicago, then to Wasco County, OR at Shadybrook about 1910. They patented land in Wasco County in 1914. It is believed that Franz and Ida returned to the Chicago area ca. 1915-16. They had four known children: 1. Albin Franz 2. Elsie who m Edward Treabuss, lived Chicago 3. Martha who m Elmer Lucke, lived Wisconsin 4. Nora who m Calvin Felt, lived San Jose, CA. Franz Balzer d. 1926, and Ida in 1945. She was born in Germany. Franz was the son of Frank and Katherine/Kate Balzer, immigrants. Franz had a brother Gustav. Gustav/Gus Balzer was born 31 March 1872 in Bieletze, Austria / Selesia?, died 1954 Lake Oswego, OR. He landed in Wasco County after stops in Australia, Alaska during the gold rush, Illinois and the John Day country of Oregon. To OR ca. 1909. He m1st Josefine Walter 8 August 1908 and they had four children: 1. Sophie b 1910, m1 Guy Taylor of Shadybrook, Wasco Co OR, m2 Ralph Delco, had sons Bobby and Jerry. 2. George b 1912, m Zelma Brown, dau of George and Bertie (Olds) Brown, had children: George Elmo and Sandra. 3. Clara b 1916 m1 Frank Anderson and had Roland, Susan and Leland Anderson, m2 Leroy Carey. 4. Anna b 1919 m Glenn Foster, had Joan, Peggie and Bruce. Gustav and Josefine are buried at Tygh Valley Cemetery. Albin Franz Balzer 1881-1964 is buried Grass Valley, OR. He m Anna Caroline Bruckert 1897-1979 and they had three children: 1. Ralph who m Mary Kenny in Moro, OR 1945 and lived Lake Oswego, OR and Arizona; 2. Melvin who m Betty See and lived San Leandro, CA; 3. Clair Leon 1926-1989 who m1 Marie, m2 Neva L.
