The 1850 census Boone Co, VA (now WVA) shows a 39-year-old Thomas Chandler and in his household an 80-year-old Frances Ballard. Supposedly book Kith and Kin of Boone County, West Virginia, Volume I, published by Boone County Genealogical Society has an annotated 1850 Boone County Census. It notes that Frances Ballard is a possible daughter of Elijah Ballard and possible mother of Thomas Chandler? Seems funny that Frances is listed as Ballard and not Chandler in the 1850 household. It is my guess that Frances never married the Chandler at all. I believe this Frances Franky Ballard to be the unmarried daughter of Thomas Ballard, brother of Elijah Ballard and both sons of Phillip Ballard, Sr., all of Orange Co, VA. The Ballard clan apparently moved into the area (Monroe Co/Kanawha Co) about 1800. If, in fact, Thomas Chandler is the son of Frances Ballard, then Thomas is surely illegitimate and born when Frances was 40 years old. This is my take on this line. I do believe the 1830 Logan Co, VA (now WVA) census shows a very old Thomas Ballard age 80 to 90, with a young male age 15 to 20, and a female age 50 to 60. The latter two, Thomas Chandler and Frances Ballard. Thomas Ballard died sometime 1830-1833 in Logan because he has disappeared from the Logan Co tax list for 1833 and appearing on that list is Thomas Chandler. Thomas Chandler who is about 21 to 23 years old. He is still in Logan Co for the 1840 census and in his household is an older female age 70 to 80, surely Frances Ballard, his supposed mother. Thomas Chandler is in Boone Co for the 1850 census and still in Boone for the 1860 census with no Frances Ballard listed in his household. Since there is a document showing Franky Ballard alive in 1857, this sorta narrows down her death. I don't know where Thomas Chandler is on later census records and haven't searched. So which Chandler male was Frances's paramour? To date the only known Chandler male in the area at the time of Thomas Chandler's birth was the William Chandler who signed the Julie/Julia Thompson and Jeremiah Ballard marriage document 10 Sep 1810 in Monroe Co, VA (now WVA). This William Chandler also appears on the 1811 Monroe Co tax list. It is hard to say exactly where Thomas Chandler was born. The Ballards were first in Monroe Co but not too long after they are found in Kanawha Co. Since Frances Ballard was born c1770, I betting her Chandler fellow was born along that date, too. It would be difficult to say if this Chandler male were actually from Orange Co, VA, but I would think he would have known the Ballard clan and the Thompson clan well enough to sign as bondsman for marriage. Who knows. Again alot of this conjecture. Does anyone out there in BALLARD land know anything of this Frances Ballard and her "bastard" son Thomas Chandler?? Any help appreciated. Thanx.
