Can anyone help identify the Mr. Bullard in this story: ***** Commemorative biographical record of the counties of Sandusky and Ottawa, Ohio Chicago: J.H. Beers & Co., 1896. pp. 481-3 [Biography of Orlin W. Harrison, grandson of Eli and Martha (Bullard) Wright] The fathers of Eli and Martha Wright both served in the Revolutionary war. Martha’s father was, with two companions, taken prisoner by Indians. The savages painted the two companions black, which meant death; Mr. Bullard, however, was favored with a coat of red paint, which signified adoption. He witnessed the death of his two companions, who were burned at the stake. A squaw befriended him, and while the Indian war was still in progress aided him in escaping. ***** Eli Wright married Mr. Bullard's daughter Martha about 1800-1810, probably in the vicinity of present-day Livingston County, New York. His brother William Wright married a Mary Bullard, presumed to be Martha's sister, in Genesee County about the same time. I have two theories: 1) Martha and Mary were daughters of John Ballard, son of Sherebiah, a Revolutionary war pensioner who died in Leicester, Genesee Co, in 1835. alternatively, 2) Martha and Mary were daughters of Luke Ballard, son of Sherebiah Jr, who died in Westmoreland, Oneida Co, abt. 1796. His widow, Cynthia (Jaynes) Ballard, md 2) Joseph Phelps. I don't have access to the Ballard newsletters, etc. that have info about the families of John or Luke. Any evidence or redirection appreciated. thom.carlson@stanfordalumni.org Notify Administrator about this message?
