hi carolyn
I hope you might be able to clarify something for me.
My great granfather robert ballantine came to canada to Galt in 1867 and he came with his brother john.I am having a hard time finding out about John...what happened to him , how he lived ,when he died and who his descendants mioght be
As far as i can tell they sailed from either glasgow or liverpool onone of the allen line ships and went to galt where they worked together for a time Roberts wife didnt like john's wife and robert and mary moved to muskoka. And so it goes from there. As far as the spelling of the name goes ...from what i've seen its been interchangable over the ages and has frequently used to disassociate ones self from an undesirable,or someone they were fighting with.
Heck the original name seems to be balladen so its gonethrough a number of changes ,sometimes all within the same family.
I have located another john in the galt area from the same time and he was married to a jennette so..... that may be him or your john maybe him, so if any of this rings a bell or you can shed light on any of this it would be great...thanks Note please contact me at [email protected]......
thanks...Mac
