I think you will find that Balfe is a very old Irish name and has its origins in the Irish word "balbh" which means a person with a speech impediment, or a stammer, or is dumb. It had its origins in County Meath, but remember that Westmeath was part of Meath until they were seperated around 1600, so you will find that the name is common also in Westmeath.
