These 3 branches of my family may have traveled the Wilderness Road from Claiborne County, Tn to Laurel & Rockcastle Counties, KY and then on to Gallatin. I would especially appreciate help in trying to sort out the Jacksons, as I know little of my gggrandfather who first appears in 1850 in Rockcastle. The list of names below is compiled from the Tax Rolls on microfilm at the Warsaw, Gallatin County, Kentucky Public Library is for the year 1844, 1854-1871 and 1873-1875. Perhaps as early as 1856 we see the arrival of settlers from Laurel County, Kentucky, such as the Levi Jackson family. The identities of some of those who migrated have yet to be determined. Levi P. Jackson is the grandson of Reuben and Mary Elizabeth Houston Jackson, but other Reubens and Levi’s are not as clear. I think it is probable that either the Bales, Goins, and Jacksons were related or knew each other from their journey along the Wilderness Road, starting in Virginia, through the Cumberland Gap to reside at Claiborne County, then on to Laurel County (where County Judge Levi D. Jackson ran a hotel along the Wilderness Road). Their religious ties to the Baptist Church which began in Claiborne County, TN may also have been a factor in communicating with one another. The earliest Jacksons in Gallatin County appear to be Moses Jackson Sr. (1760 in VA – 1821 in KY) and Christiana Walters (1760 in VA – 1851 in KY). Christiana received a Revolutionary War pension, as Moses had fought in the Virginia Line. They had six sons. The Goins first appear in Kentucky in the 1830 census. The pages for Gallatin County show Charles Goin, Garrott Goin (page 122); George Goins (page 180),; page 19 Charles Goins, James Goins, Elizabeth Goins, Charles Goins, age 71 (page 19); James Goins (page 15); John Goins (page 6); Willliam Goins (page 4). My gggrandfather William Riley Jackson was listed in the 1850 Rockcastle County census, and his county seat of Mt. Vernon are 25 miles from London, the county seat of Laurel. His relative or neighbor in Gallatin, Pleasant B. Jackson returned to Rockcastle near the end of his life. William Riley Jackson first appears on the tax rolls in 1859, apparently following Levi and Reuben Jackson and others from Laurel County to Gallatin County. Willliam Riley left Gallatin County to live in the village of Shrewsbury, Grayson County, Kentucky sometime between 1875 and 1880. ABOUT THE LIST The list includes 3 Albros, 13 Bales, 28 Goine (Goens, Gowens, etc.), and 33 Jacksons. Some are probably duplicated due to illegibility or the use of initials instead of full names. The Bales and Goins arrived early in Gallatin County, Charles Gowens and Russell Bales and James Furnish being Revolutionary War veterans from Virginia. By 1854 we see their sons and grandsons on the tax rolls. This is the smallest county in Kentucky bordered by the Ohio River and what seems to be a large number of creeks. According to a Warsaw librarian, the only remainders of the village of Napoleon (population 100 in 1870) are a general store, and the Ten-Mile Baptist Church and Cemetery. To reach Napoleon from Warsaw, she directed me to Route 42 between Carrollton and Warsaw. It lies three-fourths of a mile from the Ohio, at the narrowest part of an hour-glass shaped Gallatin County. This list is incomplete. I ran out of time and only checked Jacksons and Albros after 1867, and I accidentally omitted 1872. The following lists the name on the tax roll, the biographical information that I found, and in parentheses, the location, and the date of the tax rolls. The phrase “indeterminate location” means that I could not identify a specific creek beside the name on the tax rolls. Albro, James F. is probably related to Napoleon merchant William Albro (born 1828 in NY). Albros, Bales (Bailes), Goins (Goens, Gowens, etc.), and Jacksons and intermarried and some moved to Grayson County, KY in the late 1870s. (Paint Lick Creek, 1867) Perhaps James T. and James F. are the same individual. In the 1880 census, New York native Samuel Albro (1831-aft 1880) worked as a butcher in Carrollton, Kentucky, possibly another relative. Albro, James T. (1842-aft 1880) is probably a nephew of Napoleon merchant William Albro. James was born in Indiana and his parents were from New York. (Ohio River Property, 1868) Albro, William was a Napoleon, Gallatin, KY merchant born in NY in 1828. Most of his children were born in Indiana; their first child born in Kentucky was in 1867.
