Arthur Baldwin Killed

A letter received from George Woodford of Elma, gives particulars of the death of Arthur Baldwin, at one time employed at logging work in this County.

Baldwin was in partnership with another man named William Baldwin, known in Prineville, Oregon, as "Young Lucky Baldwin," and they owned several hundred head of wild horses. In going out to round up a bunch of the horses the men stopped at the Davenport ranch, 45 miles from Prineville, and starting out across the plains, Arthur's horse ran into a gate of wire netting and threw his rider about thirty feet, on his head on the lava rock. The horse then kicked Baldwin several times and he never regained consciousness, although he lived 43 hours and died on April 17th. He was 36 years old. His brother Oscar left Shelton 14 years ago and owns a livery stable at Prineville. After Arthur left Shelton he went to Briitish Columbia, where he was reported to have been killed in the woods. He went from there to Alaska but failing to make a stake he returned to Oregon about three years ago. Letters from Prineville say that his funeral was the largest for years, and that Baldwin was well thought of there.
