You are partially correct about all of us being descended from one family. If you trace your ancestry to the New England Balches, then you are descended from John Balch who came to Massachusettes in 1623. If you trace your ancestry to Maryland, then you are descended from a different John Balch who came to Maryland in 1658. Both Balches may have come from the same area in England so we may still all be related.

My great-great-grandmother was a Balch descended from the New England Balch line.
