Dear Richard:
My grandmother was a Balch, from Wakefield Ma. There were also Balches in Connecticut and Rhode Island, still are. There is a book called "The Balch Family in America" written in 1897 by a Galusha Balch, M.D. It describes the origin of the name, which is a bit uncertain, there are a few theories. It might be posssible to trace your family all the way back if you can at least go back to 1897. Colleen Knights, who has postings on this page, has the book and was very generous to me in regards to looking things up. The interesting thing about this family is that we are all apparently related, as there was but one family who came here from Somerset England in the 1600s. Post a message to her, and good luck!
A Balch cousin P.S. I lived in Westfield for 13 years. No Balches around that area now that I know of.
