Hello, Tom,
I am descended from a John Balch of Somerset, whom we believe migrated to Maryland, USA in 1658. He had a son, Thomas, born around 1660 in Maryland. Thomas returned to England for his formal education, according to family tradition. I believe this is the Thomas mentioned in the Monmouth Rebellion. He returned to Maryland in disguise in 1685 to escape the "Kirke's Lambs" after Monmouth's defeat. This information came to me through the writings of Thomas Willing Balch, in his book "Balch Genealogia", published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1907. I have little information regarding John Balch, the immigrant. Some parish records place the birth of a John Balch in Ilchester, Somerset, in 1635, born to Edward Balch, born in Ilchester in 1602. Edward was the son of another John Balch, born in 1580 in Ilchester. This lineage is not confirmed, however. There were many Balches in Somerset in those times. I hope this is of interest. I would appreciate any information you may have regarding the Balches of Somerset.

Bob Balch
