William Henry Bakewell was born in New York City 10 OCt. 1817 to British nationals, Thomas Bakewell and Mary Hewitt. The family returned to England when he was a small child. William (W. H.) entered the Methodist ministry in 1840. He served various parishes in England and Wales until 1855 when he returned to the U.S., serving in Vermont; he then went to Quebec and Ontario, Canada, until 1863, when about that time he came to Michigan. He served in Methodist ministries in various towns in Southern Michigan.

Rev. Bakewell's first wife was Elizabeth Newton who he married 28 Aug. 1844 in Suffolk, England, and by whom he had six children: Elizabeth [Woods](1845 - 1914); Thomas Newton (1846 - 1930); Mary Grace [Seymour](1851 - 1939); Agnes [Sanford & Smith](1856 - 1916); William Henry Jr. (1859 - 1860)and Frederick (1862 - 1914.) Elizabeth Newton Bakewell died in Brock Township, Ontario County, Canada West (Ontario) 11 Jan. 1862. Rev. Bakewell married Susan Caroline Donihoo about 1865 in Michigan; she died July 1877 Woodstock, Lenawee County, Michigan; he married a widow Margaret Cummins Palmer 1884 Clinton Co., Michigan; I believe that she died in 1907 (needing confirmation.)

Rev. William Henry Bakewell died at the home of his daughter in Fowlerville, Livingston County, Michigan, 4 March 1899 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery there.
