Another possibility is that the name was originally Bunck. From my high school German that would probably be pronounced "boonk" -- which could lead to an Americanized spelling of Bunk or Bonk. I bring this up because I, too, have seen Bonk and Bunk on various census records and also recently seen Bunk and Bunck linked together in German ancestry and Bunck would definitely be "boonk". Incidentally, I live in a town with a Buhne street that I originally guessed would be pronounced "boona", especially since it was named to honor a prominent German citizen. One could conclude that it might even have been altered to an American pronunciation of "byoon". The modern inhabitants? They pronounce it "booner". Yikes!
