CORRECTION for Mary Anne Coleman

It appears I was wrong when I stated that Mary Anne Coleman who appears on the 1880 Martin Co., KY census was the same Mary Anne (Dempsey) Coleman who married John Coleman and had an intimate relationship with P. McClellan Preston which resulted in a child named Susie Preston (alias Coleman). The Mary Anne Coleman who is listed with the White family on the 1880 Martin Co., KY census is a different Mary Anne Coleman because she married Harrison Ball on Oct. 14, 1883 at Rathe (Rafe or Rafael) White's house. This same Mary Anne is later listed on the 1900 Mingo Co. WV census as follows:

1900 Mingo County

Harrison Ball 39 Jan 1861 m-16 kvk # 475
Mary 35? 1865m-16 wkk
Nancy 15
Charlie 14
Elias 12
Silas 8
Rachel 7
Bessie May 2/12

Located a few households away is an entry for Mary Anne's step-father which is shown as:

Raphael White 57 Aug 1842 m-5
Sarah J 29 Aug 1870 m-5 (second marriage?)
James Aldridge 12 July 1887 Stepson
Wm " 8 Nov 1891 "
Mary J White 1 july 1898 daughter

This now explains the discrepancy between the ages of these two women. At least now I know this Mary Anne Coleman is not the same Mary Anne (Dempsey) Coleman who is my ancestor. This is spported by the age difference between Mary Anne (Dempsey) Coleman who was identified as "Anne" on the 1900 Martin Co., KY census and born in 1847 and Mary Anne Coalman who was in the 1880 census age 16, thus born 1864. I always felt this 17 year difference was too large to overlook.

Now it appears there was a Mary Anne (Dempsey) Coleman b. 1847 and a Mary Anne (Coleman) Ball b. 1864. I erroneously thought they were the same person because the name Coleman was so rare in Martin Co., in 1880 and because the younger Mary Anne Coleman lived so close to Mark Dempsey on the 1880 census. Perhaps, there is a connection between these two women because of the rare occurance of the Coalman/Coleman name and the proximity of the Ralph White family and the Mark Dempsey family on the 1880 Martin Co., KY census.

Now if I could only find Mary Anne (Dempsey) Coleman on the 1880 census or at least her marriage record, perhaps I would finally be able to place her with her Dempsey parents. I have went over the entire Dempsey line and I have not been able to fit her with any of the Dempsey families which suggests that Mary Anne may have been born out of wed-lock. Hopefully, time will tell.

Sorry for any misinformation. Please note this correction.

Regards,

Dorsey
