John Bainbridge - born 1850 South Hetton
My great-grandfather, John Bainbridge, was born in South Hetton in the North East of England in 1850 ish.He married Jane Vickers in about 1877.John was a coal miner - what a surprise.Does anyone recognise this info?
Up until now I have concentrated on John's daughter, Emma Bainbridge. She was my grandmother and she married Fred Norris in 1909.They had five children:Florence 1909, Margaret 1913, Hannah 1914, Joseph 1911, Fred 1919.In 1920 she split up with Fred. She and her children went into the workhouse - Highfield cottage Homes, Sunderland.
In November/December 1924 she went to a hiring fair in Newcastle and was hired as a domestic servant. She went to a remote farm in Grey Mare Hill, Hexam, Northumberland. They thought that she was a big woman but in fact she was nine months' pregnant. She had my father, Thomas, in 1924 on the farm but she didn't tell anyone who the father was. They went back to the workhouse.I am still trying to find out who the elusive father was.I would welcome any clues.
