Baims in Chicago from DROGICHIN, Poland
Hello Baims:
My name is Michael Allen Baim. My father was Albert O. Baim and my grand father was Usher Baim.
Usher and his brothers were from the town of DROGICHIN which was sometimes Poland, sometimes Russia or BELARUS (White Russia).
My fathers brother Harry came to the USA first. He was sponcored by an uncle in Chicago.
My father and his other siblings including some extra cousin came to Chicago after the first world war and settled in Chicago on the west side.
Usher owned a taylor shop on Kedvale and 13th.
Usher and Leaha had 8 children.Harry, Hyman, Esther, Betty, Ben, Albert, Sally and Michael.
There were some cousins in Bridgeport, Conneticut I believe.
After WW II some of the brothers moved to Los Angeles.
Ben was a Rabbi for an Orthodox congregation in Beverly Hills.
Hyman also moved to L.A. as did Betty and Sally.
The Cousins from Usher and Leaha's kids are:
Rochella, Irwin, Annette, Sally, Jay, Joe, Frieda, Beverly, Sherwiw, Nancy, Ricky, Judy
Origin of the name Baim:My dad told me that Baim is Yiddish for the word Tree.In German it is Baum.He believed that when people were required to select last names the progenitor of the Baim's happened to have a home with a large tree nearby and selected that to identify themselves and distinguish themselves from others as in: "you know Al, the one who lives by the large tree."
