Morning Pat Over here in the UK, there are many Veteran's associations etc. Their Canadian equivalents may be able to assist. I live not far from the Royal Naval Dockyard Rosyth. The new-stands/shops regularly have naval newspapers/magazines on sale. Bearing in mind that my limited knowledge is based on the UK, have you tried looking for his name or any Baillies on the "Navy List" of Commissioned Officers of the period? Whilst he was probably in the RCN, it could be that he volunteered early on and may have some form of RN commission. There may be different lists according to his form of service, eg Reservist, Hostilities-only, Medical Branch etc. Assuming he was an adult when his paintings were exhibited in Vancouver, then he has probably died by now if not killed in the war. Any hints at his age? Obituaries etc? Try using a Search Engine on the two HMCS ships' names and their histories. Are both true ships or are they shore establishments? Have they told you how they acquired the paintings? Anything on the backs of the paintings? The corvettes of the paintings were probably based on Halifax for North Atlantic Convoy Protection duties. There may be some knowledge of them and By Baillie in that area. Could they have been used as part of War Bond appeals? If he was not a professional artist, what was his occupation? His naval occupation may be a guide; or of course, could be completely different! Have you tried art and antique dealers in the Vancouver area? Are there any other Baillies in BC or Canada, who are/were artists, as there are frequently family traits and customs. Family folk-lore? Contact Baillies in BC. Art clubs in Vancouver? Other paintings by him still hanging in the Vancouver area in private houses? I would think that there is a fair chance that he may have written about his experiences. You will appreciate that not knowing what angles you have already covered, the above is mainly brainstorming! Alex Notify Administrator about this message?
