Hello Tashima
My family is from the Virgin Islands. They migrated up from Surinam which is at the tip of South America back in the 1700's. We came up through all the Islands. If you use some mega searches you will find a cousin of mind whose father is my grandfathers brother. My grandfather moved to Puerto Rico from St. Thomas in the early 1920's then Moved to New York City. His name was John DeGraffe. As I said my cousin who is a Law professor at Queens College his name is Luis Jorge DeGraffe.
Depending on if you're of African decent, many times they would drop the e at the end of DeGraffe. I'm not sure which! My cousin Luis traced our hertiage to Surinam. I guess we got the name from the plantation and the overseer was a man named Governor John DeGraff(e). Surnam was at one time a Dutch colony which you may know is Netherland origin. That may be the reason that there are Degraff's or DeGraffe's with an E.
I have the name of my great grandfather who also lived in Puerto Rico in San Juan. I do know he had other children other than my grandfater and great uncle. There are DeGraffe's in St. Thomas, Bermuda, Bahamas and other Virgin Islands.
