Hello Zada,

My name is Lorraine Kennedy and I live in Perth, WA, Australia. I am using my daughters email address to reply to your posting on the Higgs family name. The name most interesting to me being MARY SEAVOR HIGGS and also that you have Johnson connections

I am writing on behalf of my sister Yvonne Stephen about your Higgs posting. Yvonne's mother in law died a few months ago and she and her husband Peter were given a photo of a portrait of his gr gr grandmother LADY MARY SEAVOR DOYLE aged 22 in Bahamas.

The whole family are fascinated by this beautiful lady, so much so that Yvonne has taken it on to find out as much as she can about her. Just looking at the photo it was easy to see by the way she was dressed that they were wealthy. At my suggestion Yvonne put a posting in our Perth Newspaper asking for family information about Lady Doyle and also Francis A Moseley and she has had a great response with other people interested in Lady Doyle also.

We have found from Lady Doyle's death certificate that she was named MARY SEAVOR JOHNSON. Her parents according to the death certificate were SAMUEL JOHNSON (a Merchant) and MARY CURRY HIGGS.

Mary was born circa 1835 in Nassau Bahamas. Mary married William Henry Doyle at the age of 18. They had a daughter Mary Amelia (May) Doyle born 1859 in the Bahamas as well, there was a dec son mentioned on her death certificate. William Doyle was knighted (not known when). He was Chief Justice of the Bahamas, then stationed at the Leeward Islands and then Gibralta. Sir William Doyle was apparently one of the most outstanding Judges of his time. Sir William And Lady Doyle had a magnificent two story home in the Bahamas which is still called the Doyle Residence but is now the Art Museum.
They mixed with very famous people including the Queen mother. Sir William Doyle died between 1875 and 1881 and in the 1881 census of the British Isles Lady Mary and her daughter Mary were living in Kensington, London just near Buckingham Palace.
In 1885, according to letters, they were invited to holiday with her late husbands nephew F A Moseley who had been born in the Bahamas as well but was now living in Perth WA, and he was the Master of the Supreme Court in Perth. Lady Mary Doyle and her daughter stayed on in Perth and she died there in 1916. She was a tireless charity worker here.

F A Mosely married Lucy Darling Johnson in the Bahamas and at one stage we thought that she was Lady Doyles sister (papers mention that they were sisters) but the ages don't fit, but we think she may be her niece. Lucy Darling Johnson's father was Otis Samuel Johnson. Otis Johnson could possibly be Lady Doyles brother, he was born circa 1828. The records are very sparce in the Bahamas so we have found it very hard to get further information pertaining to BDMs.

We would be most interested in knowing the age of your Mary Seavor Higgs and if there could possibly be a connection with Mary Seavor Higgs and Mary Seavor Johnson.

I look forward to hearing from you soon,

Kind regards

Lorraine Kennedy
