Is anyone familiar with the Governors of the Bahamas prior to 1800? If so, was one of them named POWELL? I have an ancestor, born about 1802 in Georgia in the USA, who could possibly have been the son or grandson of the Governor of the Bahamas. This Governor is said to have later returned to Georgia, USA. It is believed he may have lived in the USA prior to being appointed Governor of the Bahamas. The appointment may have been a reward for remaining loyal to the Crown during the American Revolution. Their US properties would have all been confiscated as a result of the POWELL's loyalist activities. My ancestor is James POWELL. He married Clementine PERKINS who was born in SC about 1814. All of their children (except, possibly, the youngest) were born in Houston County, Georgia. Houston County is immediately south of Macon, GA. The youngest was born in Cherokee County, Texas. His mother never recovered from his birth and died soon after. Thanks for your assistance. For more info on my family, see http://Welcome.to/TheLooneyFamily (The Booklets of Elsie Wood Stroud). You can also write directly to me at EGLooney@USA.Net. Thanks!
