I recently left an e-mail with Louth Online, an online community in Co. Louth, Ireland, re: Bagnall's in that county. The following is my inquiry, followed by the response I received.
"Hello. My name is Tom Begnel.I live in the United States near Chicago, Illinois.I am interested in learning more about the Bagnall family surname from County Louth.Could you direct me to resources which may help me in my geneological research? My great great grandfather was named William Begnel (Bagnall), born in 1830 in County Louth. His father was named James, and his mother was Margaret Hoy.
I would be very appreciative of any help you could provide, including information about your local area.Thank you."
Response:
"Hi Tom:
Just had a look through the phone book. I know the Bagnall name but considered it to be predominantly a Co. Meath surname. In the book most of the Bagnalls hail from adjoinng Meath, but there are a few still in the Drogheda area, which would be south Louth (closer to Meath, incidentally).
Apart from the content on the site, which is being expanded since I got rid of the local news encumbrance, I can recommend posting whatever info you have on the Louth Online Forum, which will be presently be showing up in the Links section. You can post a similar notice in the soc.genealogy.ireland newsgroup, which Ihave found useful in the past. You should also consider searching through a few Co. Meath sites with a simailar agenda. Sorry, but I don't know any well enough to recommend.
Apart from that you could hire a qualified genealogist to dig around for you. That could be expensive, especially if you have scant information. If you decide to go that road let me know, there are some unqualified 'cowboys' out there.
Incidentally, now that I think about it, the Meath connection should be looked at a bit closer. With one of the main maternity hospitals based in Drogheda, your ancestor may have been born in Drogheda but resided in Meath, which is really only a mile away. My Mam is from Slane (Meath) and I vaguely remember her mentioning Bagnall's. If you have any more info let me know and I'll ask her next time she's over.
Hope that helps a bit.
Cheers,
