BAGGS/BEGGS
Three brothers that emigrated from East Antrim in the Northern Ireland.
They were Alexander, Archibald and Joseph.

BEGGS
Surname Origins and Meaning
Origin Displayed: Scottish
Beggs was first used as a surname among the ancient Scottish people known as the Picts.
It was the name for a person who was small of stature or little deriving from the Gaelic word beag.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Begg, Beg, Begge, Beggs and others.

First found in the invernessshire, where they held a family seat from ancient times, long before the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were:
Miles Begg who settled in Virginia in 1716, William Begg settled in Charles Town in 1767;
Adam Beg settled in Boston Mass. In 1768; Thomas Beggs settled in Virginia in 1650.

BEGG

Beggs Begg and Beggs are now almost equally numerous in Ireland, the latter belonging mainly to north-east Ulster and the former to Dublin and adjacent Leinster counties. Ulster families so called may be of non-Irish origin - there is of course, an English surname Bigge. It is reasonably certain that the Beggs of the rest of the country are of native Irish stock, their name is of the epithet class: the word beag (beg) means small. It has been used as a surname from very early times and occurs in every sort of record from the fourteenth century. Among the more interesting Beggs are four who were outlawed as Jacobites (two of these were from Galway, the only place outside Munster and Leinster where they are at all prominent-their close association with Ulster was of later date. Two others , Matthew and George Begg, were among the Papists transplanted from counties Dublin and Meath in 1656

The Covenanters, Chapter II
Alexander Beggs came from the north of Ireland and was granted extensive acreage on Buffalo Creek.... He was so highly pleased....word was sent back along the "Pennsylvania Road" to kinsmen who were waiting for the information.

Founders of Falling Spring, Chapter IV:
On Nov. 24, 1750, (a) young surveyor sold a tract of 250 acres on Buffalo Creek through which a spring branch tumbled on its way to the larger stream .... called Falling Spring. The purchaser of the tract was Alexander Beggs, or Boggs, or Baggs --the spelling of names in the early records of the frontier was always by sound...
In 1765, Beggs was able to patent 150 acres on Mill Creek, giving him a plantation of 400 acres.

Four Beggs are listed in the 1787 personal property tax records.
Thomas and James Beggs were living on adjacent farms as left by Alexander Beggs, plus Sarah Baggs and a Stephen Baggs. No record of any kind has been found for Stephen. According to the tax records Sarah and Stephen were close neighbors. Stephen later moved to Botetourt County and must have done something of note since he is named with other pioneers on a 1770-1820 map.

Baggs History
Source: Cecil Calder Garrison
According to the family tradition that was collected by Enoch4 Van Buren Baggs (1861-1959) [James3 Wright, William2, Archibald1], three brothers came to America from Ireland probably in the 1770's or 1780's. They were named Archibald, Alexander and Joseph Baggs.
It was not remembered where they had lived in Ireland, but this writer has the impression from research that the name is not common there. Most books on the origins of Irish surnames do not even mention the name Baggs. The one which did, only listed it, making reference to another source. That second book was not available then. The similarity of Baggs to the Scottish surname Beggs suggests in the weakest way the family may have been Scottish Protestants who settled in present Northern Ireland in the 1600's or early 1700s. It was told that the brothers named above settled in Virginia where it is thought by some that Joseph and Alexander remained. However, a few early records for a Joseph Baggs have been found in Georgia. Cousin Nuckie, as Enoch was called, wrote a brief family history and shared it with others. In 1953, this compiler was fortunate to visit him in Blackshear, GA, to obtain a copy of his records
