The following data was sent to me 20 years ago by the late genealogist Major John Aubrey Baggett of Laceys Spring, Ala., who based his research on that of his great-grandfather, Dr. Malcolm Baggett of Covington Co., Ala., and Pensacola, Fla., and his own extensive research in deeds and other original records. I do NOT have information on later generations, but this might be helpful. The Conecuh Co. Baggetts are descendants of Nicholas Baggett (will in Bertie Co., N.C., 1753/55; I have posted his will at www.rootsweb.com under surname Baggett, wills). Among Nicholas' children was Barnaby Baggett of Northampton Co. and Nash Co., N.C., who died c. 1781. The earliest mention of Barnaby as an adult is as a witness to the will of James Wood who m. his sister Elizabeth Baggett (Northampton Co. will dated 25 June 1751). Barnaby owned land as early as 1752 in Northampton Co. He had lived near his father's original 470-acre Northampton Co. grant of 1745. This area is near Cuttawhiskey Swamp in what is now Hertford Co., N.C. A deed recorded in May Court, 1752, shows Barnaby's deed to Elizabeth (Baggett) Wood, widow of James Wood, deceased, 9 May 1752. Barnaby moved west to Swift Creek when he was granted 500 acres in Nash Co. in April 1780. (Last mention of Barnaby.) The 1782 tax list naming Elizabeth Baggett on Swift Creek is assumed to be Barnaby's widow. Barnaby had at least two sons, Nicholas, born c. 1762, and Grandberry, born 10 Sept. 1765. Grandberry moved to Robertson Co., Tenn., and d. 1843 (from Grandberry Baggett Bible). Nicholas moved into Jefferson Co., Ga., by 1799, then to Wilkinson Co., Ga., then to Conecuh Co., Ala., by 1820, where he is shown on the census with wife and three sons under 21. No later record is found of Nicholas. One son of Nicholas is thought to be Jesse Baggett (on 1818 Conecuh Co. tax list) who was born 19 Sept. 1790, died May 1867, buried Castleberry, Ala. Jesse m. 1812, Jefferson Co., Ga., Zilla Godwin, who is buried with him. Jesse and members of his family are on the 1850 census of Conecuh Co., which can be found through a link on the Conecuh Co. home page. Also on the 1818 Conecuh Co. tax list were these Baggetts: Thomas (Choice) Baggett, who died 1850s, Harrison Co., Miss. Son of John Baggett Sr., grandson of Nicholas A. Baggett (1761 will, Northampton Co., N.C.), grandson of Nicholas Baggett (1753/55 will, Bertie Co., N.C.)Thomas Choice Baggett was b. 1780 Robeson Co., N.C., moved to Jackson Co., Ga., 1802, Pulaski Co., Ga., 1807-17, Conecuh Co, Ala., 1817-18, Walton Co., Fla., 1819-42. Thomas and sons Milton, Andrew, Joshua and Thomas moved to Harrison Co., Miss., 1843, leaving son Michael Baggett in Santa Rosa Co., Fla. Also on the 1818 Conecuh Co. tax digest: Joel Baggett Jr., born 1780s, died 1843 Rusk Co., Texas; m. Jane Beland, 1815, Jones Co., Ga. Son of Joel Baggett Sr. of Edgecombe Co., N.C., grandson of Abraham Baggett II of Edgecombe Co., N.C., great-grandson of Abraham Baggett I of Edgecombe Co., N.C.(died c. 1762, aged about 62), great-great-grandson of Nicholas (will of 1753/55, Bertie Co., N.C.). Also on the 1818 tax digest of Conecuh Co.: Blake Baggett, probably a son of Abraham Baggett I of Edgecombe Co., N.C. Appears on the 1790 census of Edgecombe with large family. Always found near Joel and Abraham Baggett. The 1820 census of Conecuh Co. shows Abraham (Abram) Baggett (III)(father of Abraham S. Baggett of Wilcox Co., Ala.); Joel Baggett (Jr.); Nicholas Baggett (father of Jesse b. 1790); Jesse Baggett (b. 1790); and Silas Baggett (Sr.) (son of Abraham Baggett III). Listed near Jesse Baggett in 1818 is a William Ruffin, born 1792 S.C., who m. a Sarah Ann Baggett, born 1800 N.C.
