Pam --
Here's an email I got from Kaye Cross almost four months ago on the subject of Thomas Bagby Sr. and his father
"I don't believe Sherri Bagby has the right Davis Bagby for us. Her web page
had come to my attention several months ago and after reviewing it, I can
see there are too many contradictions between the information she has and
the information we have. Our info is as follows:
Davis Bagby, b ca 1750, prob VA, d 10 Oct 1815 Halifax Co, NC, md 1770 to
Eliza ____. Davis and Eliza's par are not known. A William is suspected to
have been the father of Davis, all right, but the info and evidence
presented on Sherri Bagby's webpage does not mesh with known facts re this
family. Davis and Eliza had four known ch, there may have been others who d
before he d:
1) Sarah Bagby, b 1771 Halifax Co, NC, md 1790 Halifax Co, NC to Warren
Powell
2) Thomas Bagby b 1773 Halifax Co, NC, md 1795 in Halifax Co, NC to Nancy
Hawkins (this is our Thomas and Nancy and is well documented), d ca Feb
1821, Halifax or Warren Co, NC
3) Lucy Bagby b 1775 Halifax Co, NC, md 1795 in Halifax Co, NC, to William
Powell
4) Martha "Patsy" Bagby b 20 Aug 1780 Halifax Co, NC, md 6 Mar 1810 to
Ambrose Hawkins in Halifax Co, NC, d 8 Nov 1864, Halifax Co, NC (Patsy and
Ambrose and a number of their ch lived in Halifax Co NC all the days of
their lives and they are documented up to their ears.)
" Glen Johnson is also a direct descendant of Davis, Thomas, William Anderson
and on down the Bagby line. He is a very thorough, painstaking researcher. He researched this family so his daughters could be admitted to the DAR. He found in "The State Records of North Carolina" by Walter Clark, a pay roll of Capt. Wm. Brinkley's company of the First Regiment of NC Militia (commanded by Col. Samuel Jarvis) which lists Davis Bagby, Lieutenant.
"Glen sent me a copy of a letter of verification, dated 4 Sep 1981, from the State of NC, Dept of Cultural Resources, Division of Archives and History, Raleigh, NC, and signed by W. A. Mitchell, which states: 'This verifies that the following information is recorded in a manuscript volume in the custody of the state archives titled Revolutionary Army Accounts Vol IX, page 36, folio 1.
Heading: An account of certificates delivered into the treasurers office and
exchanged pursuant to an act of Assembly passed in December 1789.
To whom originally issued: Davis Bagby
Amount of the principal: 1 pound, 8 shillings
To whom delivered: not reported
Other information: none.'

"Glen Johnson states: According to the division of land of Davis Bagby there
was a will but I could find no record of it. Perhaps it was recorded in a different county or in VA. Evidently in the will it was stipulated that Thomas was to receive a particular tract of land. Anyway, this deed proves that Davis was the father of Thomas. I believe William was the father of Davis, but could find no record of it. Also, I believe William and Davis Bagby moved from VA to NC about 1775.
"Now, I do believe the family listed on Sherri Bagby's web page are related
fairly closely to our Bagbys, but if you look at the evidence closely, comparing dates, names, localities, etc. I believe you will they are not the same."
[end of email from Kaye]
I believe that in the published wills of Halifax County there are wills for both Davis and Thomas, but I can't confirm that without digging back into my notes. If I'm to get this post off to you now I don't have time to dig.
The important thing is that the above provides the basic information about Davis' family, and the fact that while it's pretty clear that the William and John Bagby who moved off to Wilkes County and later Surry County, NC were half brothers of Davis Bagby, the identity of their parents remains a mystery based on all contemporaneous evidence (i.e., what litle has survived).
Glen and others suspect that the father of these three men was another William Bagby. While there may be merit in that view, I am intrigued by the fact that the earliest Bagby to appear in the Halifax County, NC deeds is one Robert Bagby.
