Backus family in PA? (Jane Backus, b. 1830 d. 1860)
Hello.
I have only just started researching my family tree three days ago.My grandfather recently died and it was a lifelong pursuit of his, so I'm trying to finish this up for him.
He once said to me that his mother, Ida May, had told him that her maternal grandmother was related to the Backuses of Connecticut, who came here in 1637.She didn't know her grandmother's name for sure, but thought it was Jane.
However, when I began researching my great-grandmother's grandfather (the sea captain William Henry Dobson of Chicago) I discovered a biography of Capt. Dobson on the Internet, transcribed from the Album of Genealogy and Biography, Cook County, Illinois (Chicago: Calumet Book & Engraving Co., 1895).
This article stated that my great-great-grandmother, indeed named Jane, was of the Backuses of Erie, Pennsylvania, who, from what I could subsequently find on the Internet, didn't come to this country until the 1800s.She died in roughly 1860, when she was thirty years old.
HOWEVER, this is where it gets confusing ... none of the records for this more recent Backus family list my great-great-grandmother (or her sister Olive, who died in 1917 in Chicago).
Can anyone help point me in the right direction?
Has anyone ever heard of a Jane Backus who married a Dobson of Chicago?
Thanks.
