Samuel Woolsey Backus:Son of Amer. Rev.
The 1902 edition of
"A National Register of the Society Sons of the American
Revolution, New York, NY: Louis H. Cornish.
has an entry for Samuel Woolsey Backus.
Perhaps this entry has been expunged from a more recent
edition.
However,it is this edition that one is apt to find on line
(e.g. at ancestry.com or genforum.com)
So it seems useful to correct it.
The lineage reads ...
SAMUEL WOOLSEY BACKUS, San Francisco (3509).
Son of Gurdon and Julia Ann Backus;
grandson of Gurdon and Lucy (Nichols) Backus;
great-grandson of Moses Nichols, Colonel New Hampshire Militia.
This lineage is flawed, and genealogically impossible.
Lucy Backus was not the daughter of Col/Genl/Dr. Moses
Nichols AND COULD NOT HAVE BEEN.
I) Two separate sources* list the children of Dr./Col./Genl
Moses and Hannah (Eaton) Nichols; no daughter named Lucy is
among them.
II) Five census records** consistently show that Lucy
(Nichols?) Backus was born some three or more years
after the well-documented death of Dr./Col./Genl Moses*
23 May 1790.
