I am seeking information on the genealogy of Charles T. Backus. He was a friend of my gg grandparents and possibly related to my gg grandmother, Ellen Backus 1839 OH, later of Independence, Kansas 1870-98 and NE Colorado. Her birthplace was Portage Co OH, father Benjamin Backus NY, mother Mary Griswold CT. Ties to my family stem from a soldier's letter from him to them dated 4/1865. Civil War muster records show him in the 32nd IL Inf., A-Company as a recruit from a town called Newport IL. His letter suggests Scottish origins, owning horses, and an interest in politics (strong Union support). The1880 census shows him married and studying law in Waukegan IL; wife Elvira 1846 IL, son Guy 1873 IL and daughter Mabel 1878 IL. Would appreciate copies of any war records for him and any genealogy for either him or my gg grandmom. grandmother.
