Lawrence Press - 15 Jan 1874 - Aurora
Death of Mr Jerry Backman - Six months ago no one of our middle aged citizens seemed to promise longer life or more work than Mr. Backman. But he has gone to his long home. A few weeks ago he was stricken down with paralysis. Since then the general feeling was that his life could not be long. He has been prostrated, almost unconscious, every since, and on Monday morning last expired. No citizen of Aurora was more widely known than Jerry Backman. For many years he has been connected with the extensively known distilling firm of T. & J. W Gaff & Co. He was the outside business manager. He had grown into the wealthy citizen he was at the time of his death by his own indomitable energy and untiring industry. A more stifling business man was never in Aurora than Jerry Backman. He was a genial whole souled man. In him the poor had a good friend. But he has gone to try the relities of the unknown future. Peace to his ashes.
