Janice,

I guess my posting needs a little updating. I have visited the Backus Heritage Conservation Area this past August. There are no duplicate mills as you suspected. The conservation area is just outside of Port Rowan and the grist mill stands on the very site it was built on over 200 years ago. With the much appreciated assistance of other genealogists I now have my direct Backhouse line traced back to 1619 in Lancashire, England. As for old John Backhouse that built the mill, I've collected a few stories about his life, especially with regards to the war of 1812. I would love to get my hands on any kind of family records; Bible, journals, etc. I do have a transcript of John's will which proves him to be a very strong patriarch indeed!
Let me know if you have any leads!

Chris
