As I said, I'm /really/ new to this game, and I'm more in information-gathering mode than fact checking as yet. I have read different reports on Judah's parentage - either from England, or from France, or name-changed from the Bucks (see below.) Here is all I know about Judah's Rev. War service so far, found entirely on the Web (I haven't called or written anyone yet):

From David N. Back and Martha A. Back
9303 Kentstone Drive
Bethesda, MD 20817
301 530 2920 March 1991
The western side of Hampton, CT became the eastern side of Chaplin before 1800. Judah Back's farm is still there on the west side of Miller road about 1/2 mile north of US 6, with a small private cemetary nearby. Judah Back served in the French and Indian Wars and also the Revolution.
The surname is English although there are several German Backs.
According to Iris J. Connolly 30614 Greenland, Livonia, MI 48154 in her articl for the History of Williams County, Ohio:
Most of Judah Back's children, including Gilbert moved to Bridgewater, Ohio in 1834-1837, All except Christiana Back Foster, wife of Joseph Foster.
Judah Backs homestead still stands as erect and solid as I'm sure the young Revolutionary soldier did... It was built in 1781 of solid oak timbers and field stones.
Judah Back's inscription on his head stone:
LT. JUDAH BACK died Feb 12, 1821
in age, 84 years.
"Farewell my friends,
Dry up your tears,
My dust lies here,
Till Christ appears."
?According to a Genealogy of Eratus Back...
Judah Back was the only sone of George Back and native of FRANCE, and his wife native of England who came to American in 1730 and settled in Connecticut.
Served 17 May to 20 Nov 1758 under Col. Sammuel Coit of Preston in the second Regiment (French and Indian Wars) Se Vol 11. French and Indian War Rolls, Conn. Hist. Soc.

Other Web info says the Backs are descended from Bucks, who are littered throughout the area. Here's what that indicates:

Judah Back, RS. Lt. Born Jul 10 1737, Preston, Windham, CT.,.d Feb 12, 1821, Hampton, Windham, CT, buried Bare Hill Cem.,Miller Rd.,Chaplin,CT
Married Elizabeth Slate/Gates

Judah Back’s Father: John Back, born about 1705, Norwich, New London, CT, married to Elizabeth Benjamin (below)

Judah Back’s Mother: Elizabeth Benjamin, born Mar 13, 1711, in Norwich, New London, CT, married John Back Dec 10, 1731, d?

John Back’s father: John Buck(!), b Nov 30, 1652, Weathersfield,Hartford,CT – John Buck was the second son, most of the land (around Wethersfield, CT) went to first son Ezekiel, who was born in 1750.

John Buck’s father Emmanuel Enoch Buck, born 1623 in Bowington,Warwickshire,Eng, d. 1705
John Back’s mother : Sarah Ryley, born abt. 1628, married John Buck 1645, born England

Emmanuel Enoch Buck’s father William Buck, born England.

I don't have any specifics other than RS Lt. about Judah Back's Revolutionary service. I don't even know what RS means - possibly reserve? Militia or Continental Army? Are there any dedicated Back web pages with this inforrmation? Any info you have would be appreciated.

I presume your data on George from England being Judah's pa is accurate, but any info or confirmation of that would also be appreciated. I'm in Chicago, so it's tough to get to source material. Thanks.

PS - what are your favorite sites? I stumbled on a large free site with ahnentafels last summer, that includes children and lets you move forward, backward, and sideways, but I can't find it again.
